Apple Country Time

   September 23, 2008

I had the pleasure of going on a road trip to the beautiful town of Sebastopol recently, which is also known as the “Apple Country” of California. Since apples are in season this time of the year, it was the perfect opportunity to get some great tasting apples. Fall season is known for apples in various dishes, from spiced cider to caramel apples, or even salads – the list is endless. I love them all by themselves, but also love to prepare dishes with them as much as possible.

My favorite baking secret is using apple sauce as a butter substitute, and depending on the dish, an egg substitute. It works in cakes, breads, and cookies – using apple sauce really moistens them up. This not only cuts fat from your diet, it adds a unique and moist addition to your cookie, bread, or cake. So get inspired and use apples in your next recipe!

  • I love Sebastopol! Small-town feel, but close to the action of the city.
