I used to be a pumpkin pie hater as well--pecan is my personal holiday favorite, and always will be, but ever since making it from scratch for the first time a couple of years ago, I have really come to like the stuff. I think the biggest secret is using the right kind of fresh squash for your homemade puree and avoiding the canned stuff altogether. Heirloom varieties of squash are the best, but even the simple Butternut or Red Kuri varieties are tasty enough to be delightful, but despite what the "experts" all say, I avoid "Sugar/Pie Pumpkins" like the plague, they just taste horrible and watery to me. Freshly ground spices are also a must; they add so much more depth it's amazing. I will be posting a few thoughts on squash varieties on my site soon, so feel free to stop by!

By the way, thanks for the recipe; pumpkin ice cream is one of my faves, but nobody else in the house will eat it, so now I can make my own and not feel guilty about having a whole carton in the house (not to mention one full of yucky ingredients)!
