Slow Food - Make a positive difference in the world
December 1, 2009Whenever I am able to, I like to buy locally grown produce. Buying local is a great way to “Go Green” in the kitchen. There are many benefits to buying local food. First off is the taste. Vegetables bought at your neighborhood farmer’s market will have much more flavor than those bought at a big chain supermarket. Locally grown produce is fresh from the fields, not fresh from a shipping container. You may pay a little more for the locally grown goods, but you are paying it forward for a healthier, more sustainable future for the planet.
Secondly you will have a lower carbon footprint when buying local produce. What makes more sense, buying tomatoes grown 30 miles away, or 1000 miles away? Think of all the gas required to drive a truck full of tomatoes across the country, not to mention the exhaust from such a trip polluting the air and doing damage to the environment. And all you have to do is go to your local farmer’s market. It’s an easy way to be environmentally friendly.
