I’m a lover of all things cheese. That’s why a cheese platter is one of the first things I offer to bring to a party. There are so many varieties of cheese that I’ll admit it can be a bit overwhelming. I made a simple guide to help you pick the right cheeses and create the perfect cheese platter for your next party.
Picking a variety of cheeses is essential to a great cheese platter. Three to four different types of cheese is good to go by. Then it’s all about the added extras to create flavor and texture on your platter. Fresh fruits like figs, grapes and apples are some of my favorites, but pears and dried cherries are great this time of year too. I also like to have honey or preserves to add a little sweetness, some nuts like Marcona almonds for crunch, and olives and cured meats for a savory bite. Then end it all with a nice variety of crackers and/or sliced crusty bread like a fresh baguette.
To start your perfect cheese platter, pick one from each cheese group (there are a lot of options, but these are some of my favorites). Picking cheeses from different animals, like goat, cow or sheep also ensures a variety of different flavors.
Soft – Brie, Burrata, goat cheese
Semi-soft – Gouda
Firm – Aged cheddar, Manchego or Parmigiano
Blue – Gorgonzola, blue cheese
Let your cheese rest for about an hour before your guests arrive. Also make sure you have a knife for each cheese and the proper utensils for each condiment.
I partnered with Whole Foods Market this week to celebrate their “Dressing Rehearsal” event. Their Tucson store on River Rd will be hosting it December 13th-15th. If you’re local to the area, come check it out. There will be tons of delicious food tastings and pairings. Whole foods is also graciously giving one of my lucky readers a $50 gift certificate to a Whole Foods Market near you . Details for the giveaway are below.
